Uganda Map
Uganda highlighted, arrows point to Arua/ West Nile

Uganda, as you can see from the map on the right is practically the centre of Africa. I was in the northwest corner (see arrows) in a little place called Arua, bordered by Sudan to the north and former Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo). Both southern Sudan and eastern Zaire are currently rebel-held territories.

Arua MapThe area, bounded by the Albert Nile in the east is called West Nile and is only perhaps 100 miles N-S and 50 miles E-W, but has three different major language groups and about 30 dialects.

It is somewhat cut off from the rest of Uganda, with only two bridges crossing the Albert Nile into the area and 500km journey to the capital city, Kampala. However this separation means a drive through a game-park and some lovely scenery (look in Uganda photos).
